Otis Displays Green Technologies at China-US Clean Energy Seminar
BEIJING, April 23, 2013 –Tony Black, president of Otis Elevator (China) Investment Co., Ltd., attended a recent China-US clean energy cooperation seminar in Beijing and displayed its leading GeN2® belt and ReGenTM drive technologies. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Chinese State Councilor Yang Jiechi addressed the seminar, which was held in Beijing on April 13rd.
About 300 government officials and energy sector business leaders compared notes on clean energy and environmental protection during the event, which was jointly sponsored by China Industry Overseas Development and Planning Association and AmCham China.
The polyurethane coated steel belt is a core technology of Otis’ GeN2® series of elevators. Being lighter, more flexible and durable than conventional steel cables, polyurethane coated steel belts replace steel ropes that have been used by the industry for more than a century. Such coated steel belts allow for a smaller elevator machine - up to 70% smaller than conventional ones -- significantly saving room and lowering construction cost. In addition, better contact between the belt and the machine substantially improves the transmission efficiency and enabled the elevators to run more smoothly and quietly. Belts also require no lubricant, minimizing overall oil usage as compared with traditional systems. This technology, if applied to all the elevators in China, is estimated to be capable of saving about 19.2 million liters of lubricant annually.
If combined with ReGenTM drive, GeN2® elevators can reduce power consumption by up to 75% as compared with traditional systems. ReGenTM can generate potential and kinetic energy through using the elevator, convert into clean electricity, and then feed the energy back into the local power grid to provide power for other electrical equipment in the building. It is estimated that the ReGenTM drive technology, if applied to all the new installations in China for the next decade, is capable of reducing power consumption by 4,070 gigawatts yearly, which is equal to the installed capacities of a medium-sized power plant.
